COI
AND ICT INTEGRATION
The Community
of Inquiry (CoI) framework recognizes the importance of
interactions between the teaching, social and cognitive presences in creating
positive and collaborative learning communities. (1). Originally the
framework was designed for online learning environments, but it can also be
applied to blended and in-person courses. Meaningful collaboration occurs
through the interaction of three equally important elements: social, cognitive
and teaching presences. The founders of the model,
Garrison, Anderson & Archer (2000, 2001), offer the follow definitions of
the three presences: (1)
- Social
Presence: The ability to interact with others in a meaningful way.
- Cognitive
Presence: The extent to which the participants can construct and confirm
meaning through sustained communication.
- Teaching
Presence: The design, facilitation and direction of cognitive and social
processes for meaningful learning.
These
presences interact, and if one is missing, then learning suffers. For example:
- No Social
Presence: Students may interact with content and the instructor, but
they will not have the emotional, cognitive or motivational support that
comes from working with others.
- No Cognitive
Presence: There may be friendly discussion but minimal learning.
- No Teaching
Presence: Students may learn and support each other but inefficiently
without the guidance or direction of an expert.
All
parts must be present for a community to fully support learning.
COMMUNITY
OF INQUIRY AND TECHNOLOGY USED IN ONLINE/BLENDED LEARNING
Technology is providing new possibilities for
education which is transforming the world of learning around us. Technology's
integration into education was inevitable because it has long been a crucial
component of sustaining and transforming society. Technology is changing
accessibility and instructional techniques in several ways.
Blog
Blog is short for web log. It’s a bit like an online diary
or journal, except blogs aren’t necessarily private, instead they’re created
for an audience. And just like a diary or journal, a blog is relaxed, making it
an easy and comfortable way for students to get writing.(2)
Blogs are written on all kinds of topics from A to Z.
Readers can usually leave comments, which lead to discussions about the blog’s
content. For example, a blog about flipping your classroom can lead to a
discussion between novice and experienced teachers about common questions,
advice, tips, and clarifications.
How can Teachers and Students use Blogs?
·
Teachers can use blogs to publish assignments, resources,
and keep students and even parents up to date on class events, due dates, and
content being covered.
·
Teachers can also use blogs to help students’ master
content and improve their writing skills.
·
Students can use blogs to publish their writing and educate
others on a particular topic.
·
Students can also create blogs for the chess club or the
yearbook club, the football team or the upcoming prom.
Screencast-O-Matic
Screencast-O-Matic is a
screen capture recording tool that allows you to easily record your voice and
on-screen content (Powerpoint slides, software tutorials, a student paper, etc)
to create short recorded lectures, student feedback, or assignment instructions.(3)
The video is recorded to your local machine, which you can then be uploaded to
Canvas for students to view.
Screencast-O-Matic can
be a quick and easy tool to use for just-in-time recordings for your class,
since you do not need to download or install anything to your computer (if
you’re using a Mac or a Windows PC, all that’s required is to download the
screen recorder launcher). Screencast-o-matic can be used for student
presentations, to further instruction on a particular misconception in class,
to provide feedback to a whole class or just individual students, or to share
instructions for a project or assignment.
You Tube
YouTube has become a central hub for video
sharing and virtual entertainment. (4) However, it can also be an invaluable
learning tool that eLearning professionals can use to make their eLearning
courses more interactive, fun, and informative. In fact, it has the power to
transform a potentially dull or complicated subject matter into an overall
exciting and engaging eLearning experience. (4)
1. Develop playlists that explore a specific topic.
2. Create webinars that learners can use as reference tools.
3. Have learners make their own YouTube videos to improve
knowledge retention.
4. Improve comprehension rates by visually illustrating a
complex concept.
5. Use privacy settings to share videos only with certain
groups.
6. Encourage collaboration through group YouTube projects.
7.
Design
eLearning self-study courses with YouTube and Google Forms.

I like how you incorporated some history about the topic early in your blog. The explanation of each tool was also very good
ReplyDeleteGreat blog. Technology truly has provided possibilities for education
